How to Install and Update an APK Safely

Why installing an APK is easy and updating it is risky

Installing an APK is a short process: download the file, allow one app to install it, tap install, then take that permission back. The risk sits in two places. The first is where the file came from. The second is every update after it, because apps installed outside the Play Store do not update through the store.

This guide covers both, with the exact Android screens you will see and what to tap on each.

Unknown sources, signature match and sideloading explained

  • Install unknown apps: the Android permission that lets a specific app, such as Chrome or Files, install APKs. On Android 8 and later it is set per app. On Android 7 and earlier it is a single “Unknown sources” switch for the whole phone.
  • Signature match: Android only installs an update if it is signed with the same key as the app already on the phone.
  • In-app update: a prompt inside the app that downloads a newer APK from the publisher.
  • Sideloading: installing an app from a file instead of from a store.

Who this APK install walkthrough is meant for

This is for adult Android users in India installing a rummy, teen patti or similar app that the publisher distributes as an APK. If you have not yet checked the file, read how to check whether an APK is safe first. This page assumes you already have a file from the right source.

How to install and update an APK safely on Android 10 to 14

The steps below match stock Android 10 to 14. Phones from Xiaomi, Realme, Vivo, Oppo and Samsung use slightly different labels, but the same switches exist.

1Download from the publisher's domain
2Allow unknown installs for one app
3Install and check the version
4Switch the permission off
5Update only from the same source
  1. Download. Type the publisher’s domain into Chrome yourself and download the APK. Wait for the download to finish fully.
  2. Open the file. Tap the finished download. Android will say that your phone is not allowed to install unknown apps from this source and show a Settings button.
  3. Allow one app. Tap Settings and turn on “Allow from this source” for Chrome or Files only. Do not change it for other apps.
  4. Install. Go back and tap Install. If Play Protect shows a grey notice that the app was not from Google Play, you can choose to scan it and then install. If it shows a red “harmful app blocked” screen, cancel and delete the file.
  5. Check the version. Open Settings, Apps, the app name, App details. Confirm the package name and version match the publisher’s page.
  6. Switch it off. Go to Settings, Apps, Special app access, Install unknown apps, and turn Chrome or Files back off.

Storage, Android version and details to have ready

  • Android 5.0 or later for most current rummy APKs. Rumble Rummy, for example, needs Android 5.0+ (API 21).
  • Free storage of at least three times the file size, because Android unpacks the APK during install. For a 33.9 MB file, keep about 100 MB free.
  • A stable Wi-Fi or mobile connection. A broken download fails to install and pushes people towards mirror sites.
  • The expected package name, version and size noted down beforehand. Our Rumble Rummy APK page lists them for that app.

A first install, a real update and a fake one

First install of Rumble Rummy. When we installed version 1.1.2 on 6 October 2026, the file was 33.9 MB and the package name was com.rumble.rmy.games. Its permission list covered internet, notifications, vibration and similar basics. It did not request SMS, contacts, accessibility or camera. You can download Rumble Rummy and repeat these checks yourself.

A routine update. Months later, the app shows “New version available”. You tap it, the app downloads the new APK from its own server, and Android shows “Do you want to update this app?”. That wording matters. It means the signature matched. Check the new version number in App details afterwards.

A fake update. A Telegram group posts “Rummy v2.0, ₹500 bonus, uninstall old version first”. If you try to install it over the real app, Android says the package conflicts with an existing package. That error is the signature check working. The instruction to uninstall first exists only to get around it. Ignore the message and delete the file.

Update mistakes that undo a safe install

The install is the easy part. The mistakes usually happen weeks later when a new version is due or the app stops opening.

Signs an APK update is not genuine

  • Any instruction to uninstall the current app before installing an “update”.
  • A “package conflicts” or “app not installed” error on an update from an unfamiliar link.
  • Version numbers that jump oddly, such as from 1.1.2 to 9.0, with no change on the publisher’s page.
  • An update that suddenly asks for SMS, contacts, accessibility or permission to install other apps.
  • Update links that arrive by SMS, WhatsApp forward or a short URL.

Settings and shortcuts that leave your phone exposed

  • Leaving “Install unknown apps” on for Chrome or Files after you finish. Any later download could then install with one tap.
  • Turning on the old phone-wide “Unknown sources” switch on Android 7 and earlier and forgetting it. Switch it off after each install.
  • Uninstalling the app to “fix” a failed update. You lose the signature protection and may lose your login session.
  • Updating from a different site than the first install. Even if it is genuine, you cannot compare it to anything.
  • Installing while screen sharing or on a call with someone claiming to be support. No real support team needs that. Our customer care guide explains how to reach Rumble Rummy support.

Before and after you install an APK

Safe installing is one part of choosing an app. The other parts are the operator, the payouts and your own limits.

Installing and updating APKs on Android: common questions

How do I install an APK on Android?

Download the APK from the publisher's own domain, tap the finished file, then tap Settings and turn on 'Allow from this source' for Chrome or Files only. Go back, tap Install, and check the package name and version in App details. Finally, switch that permission off again. Check the file first with our APK safety guide.

How do I check which version of an app is installed?

Open Settings, Apps, the app name, then App details. Android shows the installed version and package name there, and you can compare them with the version listed on the publisher's download page. For Rumble Rummy, the version we checked on 6 October 2026 was 1.1.2, package com.rumble.rmy.games. The full values are on the Rumble Rummy APK page.

Why does my phone say 'App not installed' when updating an APK?

On an update from an unfamiliar link, it usually means the file is signed with a different key from the app on your phone, so Android refuses it, sometimes as 'package conflicts with an existing package'. That is the signature check working. With a genuine file, check free storage. Take updates only from the in-app prompt or the official app website.

How do I update an APK app safely?

Take updates only from the in-app prompt or the same website as the first install. When Android asks 'Do you want to update this app?', the signature matched; afterwards, check the new version number in App details. Ignore any message telling you to uninstall the old app first, and any update link sent by SMS or WhatsApp. See our rummy APK install walkthrough.

Does installing a rummy APK mean I can play for money?

No. Being able to install an app does not mean you may play for money where you live. Real-money gaming rules in India vary by state, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 applies nationwide, and you must be 18 or older. Check your state's rules before you deposit and read our responsible gaming page. This is not legal advice.

How do I turn off 'Install unknown apps' on Android?

Go to Settings, Apps, Special app access, Install unknown apps, then switch off Chrome, Files or whichever app you used. On Android 7 and earlier, turn off the phone-wide 'Unknown sources' switch instead. Leaving the permission on lets any later download install with one tap. Phone brands use slightly different labels for the same switch. See APK vs Google Play apps for why APKs need it.

Should I uninstall an app to fix a failed update?

No. Uninstalling removes the signature protection, so a re-signed copy could install in its place, and you may lose your login session. A message telling you to uninstall first is a typical sign of a fake update. Check your storage and connection, then retry from the in-app prompt or the official page. For Rumble Rummy, our customer care guide explains how to reach support.

How much storage do I need to install an APK?

Keep at least three times the file size free, because Android unpacks the APK during install. For a 33.9 MB file such as Rumble Rummy 1.1.2, that means about 100 MB. Most current rummy APKs also need Android 5.0 or later. Use a stable connection, since a broken download fails to install. Our rummy APK download guide covers the download step.
